Free, unofficial F1 live timing, maps and replays

Pit Wall is a free Formula 1 dashboard by JD (jdvb.com.au). It shows live timing, sector times, tyres, pit stops, race control, team radio and car positions on satellite and 3D circuit maps, and replays finished sessions between race weekends.

Is Pit Wall official? #

No.

Pit Wall is a personal project by JD (jdvb.com.au / @jdvbphotography). It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to Formula 1, the FIA, any team, or any official broadcaster.

Is it free? #

Yes.

It runs in a web browser on desktop, tablet and phone. There is no account, sign-up or app to install.

Where does the data come from? #

Session data: OpenF1, an independent API for live and historical Formula 1 data. That covers timing, positions, pit stops, tyres, race control messages, weather, team radio and car telemetry.

Team radio audio plays from Formula 1's live timing servers. Rain radar comes from RainViewer.

Circuit maps: satellite imagery © Esri, Maxar, Earthstar Geographics; roads, buildings and circuit outlines © OpenStreetMap contributors; terrain from Esri elevation data. Turn numbers and timing marks follow the FIA's official circuit maps where those are available.

How live is it? #

During a session this site's server fetches OpenF1 once for every viewer and refreshes it every few seconds. The page checks for new laps every 15 seconds and for car positions every 5 to 8 seconds.

If timing stops updating for more than 40 seconds, the LIVE badge turns amber and counts up (DELAYED). The board keeps the last data it received until fresh data arrives.

Ahead of your TV? The timing feed usually runs ahead of the broadcast. Click TV SYNC to hold the map back 20 seconds, then fine-tune with − and + (1 second, Shift for 5) until the session clock matches your TV. Or press T the moment the leader crosses the line on TV.

Completed sessions are fully available about 30 minutes after the chequered flag.

Is the map live or a replay? #

The badge at the top always says which.

How GHOST RING works #

In races and sprints, GHOST RING shows where each driver would rejoin if they pitted now. The ribbon under the header is one lap of the track laid out as time, with the leader on the right. Open the full ring from the right-hand tab or with G.

It is an estimate: slow stops, pit-lane traffic and penalties are not included.

Published vs estimated #

As published by OpenF1

  • Lap and sector times, speed trap
  • Running order and classification
  • Pit stops, tyre compounds and stints
  • Race control messages and flags
  • Weather, team radio
  • Car telemetry: speed, throttle, brake, gear, RPM

Calculated by Pit Wall

  • Intervals between cars, from lap completion times
  • Car positions on the map, smoothed between data points
  • Race trace and lap charts
  • GHOST RING pit-rejoin prediction
  • Road traffic, boats and aircraft in the 3D city views: animated decoration, not real
